Spring Painting Season in Colorado: What to Do First

Spring in Colorado Springs arrives fast — and so does the demand for exterior painting contractors. If your home took a beating over the winter, you're not alone. The freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure, and moisture that Colorado winters deliver are hard on every exterior surface.

Here's how to assess what your home needs and get ahead of the spring rush.

Why Spring Is a Critical Time for Your Home Exterior

Winter doesn't just make your home look tired — it actively damages exterior surfaces. By the time the snow melts and temperatures stabilize, most Colorado homes have accumulated some combination of:

  • New stucco cracks from freeze-thaw expansion
  • Peeling or bubbling paint where moisture got underneath
  • Faded or chalky surfaces from UV degradation
  • Damaged caulking around windows and doors
  • Weathered wood on decks, fences, and trim

The good news: spring gives you a chance to address all of it before the summer heat sets in. The challenge: every other homeowner in Colorado Springs is thinking the same thing. Painting contractors fill up fast in April and May.

How to Assess Your Home After Winter

Before you call a contractor, do a thorough walk-around of your home. Here's what to look for:

Stucco

Look for new cracks — especially around windows, doors, and corners where movement is most likely. Run your hand across the surface. If it leaves a chalky residue, the coating has broken down. Look for staining or discoloration that might indicate water infiltration.

Paint on Wood Surfaces

Check siding, trim, fascia, and soffits for peeling, bubbling, or bare spots. Pay special attention to north-facing surfaces, which stay damp longer and tend to show paint failure first.

Caulking

Inspect every joint where two different materials meet — around window frames, door frames, where siding meets trim, and where the foundation meets the wall. Caulking that's cracked, shrunken, or pulling away needs to be replaced.

Deck and Fence

Look for graying, cracking, or splintering wood. If the wood has lost its color and the grain is raised, it's time for a cleaning and recoat. Press a screwdriver into any area that looks soft — if it sinks in easily, you have rot that needs to be addressed.

Gutters and Downspouts

While you're at it, check that gutters are clear and downspouts are directing water away from the foundation. Water pooling against the foundation is a major contributor to stucco and paint failure at the base of walls.

What Spring Painting Conditions Look Like in Colorado

The ideal exterior painting window in Colorado Springs typically opens in late April or early May, once nighttime temperatures are consistently above 40°F and the risk of late-season snow has passed.

May and June offer excellent painting conditions — mild temperatures, low humidity, and long days. July and August are workable but require scheduling around afternoon thunderstorms and avoiding the hottest part of the day.

If you want your project done in May or June, you need to be on a contractor's schedule by March or April. The best crews book out 4–6 weeks in advance during spring.

Prioritizing Your Spring Projects

If you have a list of things that need attention, here's how to think about priority:

Do first:

  • Any stucco repair (needs time to cure before painting)
  • Replacing failed caulking (prevents further moisture damage)
  • Addressing any rot or structural damage to wood

Do second:

  • Full exterior repaint if the coating has failed
  • Deck cleaning and recoating
  • Fence staining

Can wait:

  • Purely cosmetic color changes on surfaces that are otherwise in good condition
  • Interior painting (not weather-dependent)

Getting an Accurate Estimate

A good exterior painting estimate isn't just a price — it's a scope of work. When you get an estimate from Confident Coatings, we walk the entire exterior with you, identify everything that needs attention, and give you a written breakdown of what we'll do and what it will cost.

We don't do drive-by estimates or ballpark numbers over the phone. The condition of your surfaces matters too much for that.

Book Early — Spring Fills Up Fast

We start taking spring estimates in February and March, and our schedule fills up quickly. If you want your project done before the summer heat, the time to call is now — not when the weather turns nice and every contractor in town is suddenly booked out six weeks.

Free estimates, no deposits on most jobs. Call or text Bart, Patrick, or Peter to get on the schedule.
